Drawer slides are mechanisms that allow drawers in cabinets, desks and sideboards to slide in and out. Before now, drawers usually require a lot of elbow grease to move in or out. Today, the wood cabinet has been replaced by slide mechanisms made of either stainless steel or aluminum that allow for smoother movement of the drawer.

Based on how they are mounted inside the drawer slot, the four drawer slides types include;

Side mounted slides

This is a common type of slide found in many kitchen cabinets and office desks. Even heavy duty storage cabinet drawers are mounted with this type of drawer slide. The design is simple, stable, durable and easy to install. The assembly is mounted on each side of a drawer. The aluminum or stainless steel bar extension is mounted on both sides of the inside of the cabinet. Assembly line on the drawer with the bar inside the cabinet allow the drawer slides to move effortlessly.

These are sliding drawer assemblies designed for light storage. Therefore, they are usually installed in the drawers of the office desk and tables. The assembly is mounted in the middle area of the bottom of the drawer, stabilized by a support inside the table behind the drawer. The bracket has a metal bar with a joint extension and is inserted into the accessory slide mounted on the bottom of the drawer.

This type of slide is perfect for drawers that will be used to store heavy items. The Assembly is arranged under the drawer on each side, providing a high degree of stability and support. Metal bars are mounted on the inside of the drawer or cabinet, particularly on the front and inside edges towards the rear. Slide assemblies are mounted on the bottom of the drawer on each side.

The drawer slides rollers eliminates the friction which makes it easier for the weight of the cabinet to roll inward or outward.

Mounted under the side slide

This type of slide is often referred to as the European slide. Technically, it is a variation of the side mount type design but with a couple of turns. To begin with, the drawer side supports are located at the bottom of each side and not centered as in the side mount type. Secondly, the metal bar does not have an extension, which allows only a small opening as the drawer slides out.

Therefore, access to the inside of the drawer is quite limited. However, this design has its advantages. Since the side sliding assemblies are mounted on the bottom of each side, the weight capacity of the drawer increases exponentially due to the increased stability and support. Apart from the metal cabinets, the Drawer slides for furniture reduces the physical impact on the wooden components.
